Building your own real estate business can be scary. You are your own boss. You’re in charge of it all—daily operations; hiring and managing employees; tracking the business’s performance. You are the one who has to hold yourself accountable. You are the one issuing yourself a paycheck. You alone are responsible for the success of your business.
It’s a lonely gig, entrepreneurship.
The good news is, you’re not really alone. You have your mentors and coaches, your previous employers and coworkers. You have your local association of realtors. And you have your technology.
Technology is a powerful sidekick in this industry. In any industry, really. Because technology allows you to do things mere humans can’t do, like remember a thousand different tasks and when they all need to happen and for whom they need to happen. Technology can work magic on your business operations. It can automate and optimize your entire process, making sure every task is executed to perfection.
And when that happens—when everything occurs at the right time, at the highest level of performance, and with great ease—you get to experience a “flow state.”
Here at Realvolve, that’s our goal: to create a flow state for you and your business.
What is a flow state, you ask?
It’s a concept that was identified and studied by Hungarian-American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (phonetically pronounced as “me high, cheeks send me high”). When a person is in a flow state, they are fully immersed in the task at hand. They see their goals with perfect clarity, they lose all self-doubt, they feel completely in control of what they’re doing, and they are performing at an optimal level with what feels like no effort. It feels like great work is simply flowing out of them.
(I can tell you, about an hour and a half into working on this blog post, I finally found myself in a flow state, and it was wonderful. The sudden clarity of what I wanted to convey, and the way all of the perfect words just streamed out of me—it’s always the most rewarding part of the writing process.)
The perfect ride
Kristian Jackson, a contributor to the Patagonia blog, wrote a beautiful description of flow state, in which he recounted a moment of flow while mountain biking:
Today, the ride is perfect.
It starts with the sounds. My tire knobs ripping damp dirt like the pull of a zipper. The pop, pop, pop of my wheels skittering across the tops of rocks. The airy squish of my suspension as I unweight.
Then, silence. The anxiety…is gone. Everything turns fluid. My movements align with the obstacles: my knees pointing to increase grip, my joints relaxing for better range of motion, my eyes focusing not on the obstacles but the channels between. I cease to be aware of myself as something separate from what I am doing. I have become a coherent wave of action. I have achieved the flow state.
What’s interesting is that this trail was actually designed to help mountain bikers achieve a flow state, as Jackson explains:
The way these features are structured—the angle into and out of a berm, the shape of a jump’s face, the way a rock roll is positioned—communicates to the rider the required skill set. The feedback transferred to the rider is immediate and unambiguous, giving them an almost preemptive feeling of success.
This innately focuses their attention on the moment at hand, and there is no room for distracting thoughts or ego. There is only action and awareness, unconscious response and inherent enjoyment. Time disappears. They achieve flow, whether they know it or not.
The trail was designed to keep their attention, showing them just what to do the second before they need to do it. The trail designers themselves orchestrated the flow state that cyclists would later experience.
Designing your path for success
It’s kind of like what we’re doing here at Realvolve. We want to help agents get their businesses into a flow state, so we designed our own version of a mountain bike trail: workflow automation software that orchestrates an entire real estate business process.
